4 New Year’s Resolutions For Divorcing Parents

The New Year is a fresh start to a brand new chapter in life. That chapter can feel weird, however, when you are still in the middle of a divorce carrying over from the last year. Divorce is even more complicated for parents, as you navigate how to stand up for yourself and protect your children in even measure. In the middle of a difficult process, here are our 4 New Year’s Resolutions that divorcing parents should take to heart:

Focus on the Children

It can help to remember that you and your ex have at least one thing in common: you both want the best for your children. You may disagree on what that is, but you can agree that raising your children the best way possible is your top priority. Use that to find common ground on issues where it is difficult to locate.

Pick Your Battles

No one comes out of a divorce with every single thing they wanted. Just like anything in life, it is important to set priorities and stick to them. If you know going in what you are unwilling to compromise on and what is less important to you, it will always lead to better results.

Take Time for Yourself

Divorce is a long and complicated process. For parents, it can be even more overwhelming trying to take care of your children while your own life is dominated by this event. No matter what your situation is, find time to be alone with yourself during it. Find whatever relaxes you – whether it is taking a bath, going for a jog, or reading a nice book – and set some time aside for it.

Celebrate Milestones

If you go into divorce deciding you will only rest when it is over, you are setting yourself up for a difficult time. Divorces can last years, and you can’t afford to be in crisis mode for that long. Celebrate the small milestones and achievements throughout the process! Give yourself some credit and find happiness in small moments, not just the eventual end of the line.
